I was raised in Little Village where Hispanics are the dominant race. My streets have pot holes, garbage is our atmosphere, and families are left with the hope that maybe the next day will eventually result to having a job. My community is under-served. It took nineteen hunger strikers to get the high school I have now. Starving to be heard is an injustice. The daily struggle the hunger strikers faced was an injustice also. The injustice of others affects the surroundings, which in turn causes a domino effect. The way to better things is by serving the community, the people, and the environment. Just by having the motivation and passion to want to take action, and wanting a better future not just for you, but for others who live and dream of a better world too. The first time I experienced an injustice was when my teachers got illegally fired, and when CPS' Network took our AP classes away. I had anger inside me. Right then and there I knew I'd be part of a sit-in and part of the protest. Making the choice to sit-in and protest made the difference. Justice has to come by feeling anger, feeling the fire, the passion, and an endless motivation. Social justice is not about having people make choices for you, or having people decide what your future should look like. Social justice begins when you start making choices for yourself, getting the knowledge, the skills and habits you need to better yourself and the people around you. Justice is something that cannot be measured or defined to the right definition, because justice comes in various forms and sizes. The blazing fire is what lightens the path to social justice.
