Veterans who return from war have a difficult time interacting with their family and friends. With the increase of women veterans it is more common for women veterans to get more help for their mental disorder than male veterans. Research has showed that “Vietnam veterans with PTSD are twice as likely as veterans without PTSD to have been divorced and 3 times as likely to experience multiple divorces” (American Psychological Association 2007). There was approximately “1.5 million veterans in the United States and Puerto Rico were women and about 8% of the total veteran population in 2009” (Americas Women Veterans: Military Service History and VA Benefit Utilization Statistics 2011, November 11). Veterans who do not get help for their mental disorder begin to lose their families and friends potentially being left alone with no support or motivation to get better. Since the number of women veterans has increased people are supporting and providing women with more resources than male veterans. Women are getting the support, but for those male veterans who do not get help are at a greater risk of becoming alcoholics, homeless, and even more aggressive.
Since there is an increase in the number of veterans with PTSD it has caused great controversy around the world for two reasons. One is the gender difference in social support levels and benefits, and the second is where the money should be spent and who it should be spent on. People around world have made complaints that too much money is being spent on veterans instead of fixing the economy, the cities, education, and social programs. Due to this complain there was a cut in pension benefits for veterans by one percentage point (Montgomery, L. (2013, December 31). This one percentage drop has angered many veterans, and many are protesting to get the benefits they deserve. What makes this problem so difficult is the amounts of information people are told and if people are willing to take action. Veterans are not able to pay for the treatment of their disorder if they are unemployed. Investing the money that these veterans cannot afford will help them get treated for their PTSD and the veterans will be able to live a social life.
