Applied Psychology
Psychology is the study of the human mind and its functions. This field is important to humanity because it gives a better understanding to how we perceive, remember, and learn, how we select our friends and partners, things that motivate us. (Norden, J. (n.d.). Understanding the Brain). For the reasons that the United States is making poor decisions to send soldiers to unknown areas after they have been trained for a certain area it has caused soldiers to be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. The poor decisions being made about the deployment may trace back to how the person was raised in their family. Majority of the people in congress must have grown up and rose to think that the United States must always be serving and be protected. Their decisions may also trace back to living in a family where parents or sibling must have been involved politically. Based on this trained mentality most of the decisions being made by congress or government are influenced to how their childhood was.
Those soldiers who are deployed to war experience anxiety. Adapting to a new environment can cause feelings of being lost, feeling lonely, and feeling home sick and severe depression. Most of the soldiers who are at war lack the Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. The Hierarchy of needs consist of physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization (Chapman, A. Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs motivational model). Most of the soldiers at war lack enough water, food, and safety. Without these physiological needs it is hard for soldiers to perform well in ambush situations, which puts them at risk of being victimized that can potentially lead to PTSD. Many soldiers enlist themselves in war to find that feeling of love and belonging, and maybe by enlisting themselves it gives them that sense of love and belonging. At war many soldiers experience a mixture of emotions. Their anxiety affects the way in which they perform. The more soldiers are exposed to the environment they begin to perceptually learn what to do.
To help better these veterans with PTSD psychotherapy can serve as a way to help. Psychotherapy is a way to help people with mental disorders, and find ways for them to overcome thoughts and help them communicate with others in a healthy way. Cognitive therapy also serves a way to help veterans recognize their negative behavior and find ways to break their patterns of behavior. Humanistic therapy will help veterans with self-awareness and finding the good in them. The field of psychology can used positively to change the world by figuring out and finding solutions to the outcomes of negative behaviors. Being able to know how the person may act in later situations can help the people around find way to cope and control it in a healthy way. Having the opportunity to learn psychology has taught me a lot about human behaviors, and how negative behaviors affect our everyday decisions. Psychology can be used to determine how a person may perform as an employer at a new job. Psychology has an advantage to businesses, schools, employers, making decisions based on political, social, and economic situations.
